Fuel the Fire: Igniting the Competitive EdgeđŸ”„

Fire has always been life. Survival. Power.

In Greek mythology, Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to humanity—igniting our potential and proving that fire has always been the spark that drives progress and power.

In the popular reality show, Survivor, it’s the symbol of your game—fire represents your life in the game and when it’s snuffed out, you’re done.

In sports, fire is the heartbeat of competition. Without it, you’re out of the game.

Let me ask you
 Are you bringing the heat?

What’s Missing?

My son’s team isn’t bringing the heat. Not consistently. It's not firing on all cylinders.

A handful of players skate hard, they're focused, battling for every puck. The rest? Just. Don’t. Bring. It.

And it shows.

More turnovers than a bakery.

So many lost puck battles someone should call for backup.

Great passes. Right onto the opposing team's stick.

And, no sense of urgency. Chill bro.

Can you smell what I'm cooking?

Without the fire, they’re coasting. And coasting doesn’t win games.

Here’s the BIG TWIG Problem:

It’s not just about losing games. It’s about losing the edge.

A team without fire drags everyone down. Even the players who do bring it feel the weight.

When fire is missing, mediocrity creeps in. And for competitive athletes, mediocrity is unacceptable.

Why Fire Matters

Fire separates good from great.

It fuels relentless effort, shift after shift.

It’s not about reckless aggression. Fire can be calm, calculated intensity.

Focus. Precision. Drive.

Competitive athletes don’t just play the game. They bring the game.

Fire makes the difference.

So Where Does Fire Come From?

I was talking with a coach about this. We agreed: You can’t coach fire.

Players either have it, or they don’t.

But here’s the twist
Fire doesn’t appear out of nowhere.

It’s forged. Through adversity. Through battles. Through the refusal to break.

Fire is a mindset. It’s the BIG TWIG mindset.

And you can't start a fire without a spark.

How to Fuel the Fire

1. Turn Setbacks into Fuel. Lose a face-off? Battle harder for the next one. Make a bad pass? Redeem yourself. Every mistake is a chance to reignite.
2. Compete Every Shift. Fire doesn’t take breaks. Bring it every moment you’re on the ice.
3. Refuse Mediocrity. Don’t settle for coasting. Push yourself and your teammates to do better.
4. Find Your Edge. Fire isn’t just about aggression. It’s about intensity, focus, and relentless drive. Bring your version of fire.

TWIG Check: Are You Bringing the Heat?

    Hockey isn’t just a game. It’s a proving ground.

Your fire doesn’t just fuel you. It fuels your team.

Don’t play to get by. Play to ignite.

BIG TWIG says: Bring the heat. Or get out of the kitchen.
